Choosing the Perfect Setlist for your Wedding

There are some things that only come with time.

I've been playing wedding and corporate gigs for over 10 years now, and let me tell you.. I have seen some stuff! Especially early on, I played a lot of gigs supporting other bandleaders as a guitarist. I can recall plenty of weddings in those early days before I started leading where dancefloors flopped. Hard.

Why? It all comes down to song selection. I've done hundreds of weddings, and I've seen a lot of things. The vibe of your dancefloor is often completely dependent on what songs the band chooses to play. Speeches have ended, the first dance is done.. what will get the party started?

See, the problem is, musicians and singers are a creative bunch. And often, the creative ego gets in the way of a good time. A wedding dance floor is not the right moment to bust out your original songs that no one knows. Choosing set lists that absolutely pump comes down to experience, knowledge of the client, and an understanding of the musicians that you were playing with.

In the case of DJ work, all of this matters as well, except you are not limited when it comes to the musicians you're playing with - ANY song is an option! What a winner.

But don’t play originals to a wedding dance floor - people want to party! To songs they know and love!
